Mortal Kombat 9 is a fighting video game in the "Mortal Kombat" series. The game was released on April 19, 2011 for Xbox, PlayStation 3 and PC. It is not a continuation from previous games, but instead a reboot with a new storyline set after the events of "". The story revolves around an ancient war between two races called Outworld and Earthrealm. The Kindred, a powerful race from Outworld, first appear as a threat to Earthrealm, but eventually reveal that they have been manipulated into serving the fallen Elder God Shinnok. The God of Thunder Raiden and his warriors from Earthrealm decide to free the enslaved races of Outworld from Shinnok's influence to prevent him from conquering all realms. Kratos is one of the playable characters featured in "Mortal Kombat", fighting with his fists, legs and blades. In addition to doing damage to opponents by hitting them, he can also manipulate the environment for additional attacks. Unlike other characters, Kratos does not need experience points nor has a meter that limits special moves. Instead, he collects red orbs during battle which can be spent on moves. Some of these moves give Kratos additional weapons, such as Nemean Cestus and the Blades of Exile.

The game was developed by NetherRealm Studios in Chicago, Illinois in collaboration with Midway Games Chicago.
